Los Alamos Arts Council Vice President Steve Bublitz, left, presents a $100 prize to Jonathan Dowell of Los Alamos for winning the 2022 first quarter Daily Postcard Photography Contest. The discussion happened this afternoon at the Los Alamos Daily Post newspaper workplace. Dowell shot his award winning photo,’Cold Frosty Morning Undoubtedly!’ including a deer on Barranca Mesa and it was released Feb. 6, 2022 in the Post. The judges admired the quizzical pose and whimsy of the snow on the deer’s face, including that the information were in sharp focus and the direct exposure was good for the flat light. About the Daily Postcard Photography Contest:
Los Alamos homeowners Robert and Ann Wells established a fund in 2017 at the Los Alamos Arts Council whose function is to award a prize of $100 to the photographer who sends the best picture of the quarter released as a Daily Postcard in the Los Alamos Daily Post newspaper.
“We have actually been impressed by the constant advancement of the Los Alamos Daily Post as a thorough neighborhood news source and have actually specifically enjoyed the variety of pictures submitted for publication by local residents. The image reward ideally will motivate a lot more variety of images and provide recognition for regional photographers, which might be of particular advantage to those considering professional professions,” Robert Wells said at the time.
Robert and Ann Wells asked that a panel of three professional photographers be selected to evaluate the contest, one by the Wells, one by Post personnel and one by the Los Alamos Arts Council. The professional photographers for this first quarter of 2022 award are Ken Hanson, T.K. Thompson and Don Taylor.
